The latest issue of WIRED has a superb article detailing how a PhD student has used LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education as a handy research assistant.

Daniel Strange from Cambridge University used the kit instead of similar scientific instruments, which would have could thousands of pounds, to complete the repetitive actions required to advance his research into medical implants.
